Raglan is the perfect place to fulfill service and community projects due the beach, mountain and town setting. Beach clean-ups along in the Whale Bay area are within walking distance of Karioi Lodge, and offer stunning scenery. Visitors perform a service for the community and explore the habitat of the paua, p?paka (crab), and Neptune’s necklace. Discussion around the ocean ecosystem and trash accompanies the beach clean up for added understanding. In-land service project options include gardening and pest trapping. Gardening projects are located at the Raglan area school, or at community gardens in conjunction with the Environment Centre. Visitors will roll their sleeves up for weeding, planting and watering. Alternatively visitors can learn about the invasive species of stoats, rats, and mice that live on Mt. Karioi. Trap checking and maintenance can be done in conjunction with a lesson about pests, and a trek on the Karioi Lodge loop track or Mt. Karioi track.
